Online psychology and counselling courses – learn about the human mind today!

Did you know nearly half of all Australians will need help with their mental health during their lifetime? Studying psychology and counselling has never been more important and the mental health industry is currently in a global boom. People are arguably experiencing more pressure from a greater number of sources than ever before, with global destabilisation, environmental concerns and wealth inequality causing uncertainty. Adding to that, the pressures of modern technology and the lingering threat of a recent pandemic have combined to create a high-pressure environment, which in turn affects our relationships with other people.

Our online psychology and counselling courses offer excellent opportunities for people looking to deepen their understanding of the human mind. At Careerline Courses we offer a wide range of options to study psychology and counselling online. We cater to many students with broad interests in psychology and counselling, including expanding their personal knowledge, community development or progressing their careers. Whatever your interest, we have the right course to start you on your journey into the field of mental health.

Should I study a psychology course or a counselling course?

Our counselling courses offer a foundation in providing practical, face-to-face support, while our psychology courses are more theoretical and appeal to those wanting to understand the “why?” of the human mind. In Australia, there are legal requirements to become a registered psychologist that involve significant tertiary study – usually a bachelor’s degree followed by a master’s degree with many hours of clinical supervision. The psychology courses we offer give you the opportunity to gauge your interest in a one-on-one, supportive environment without diving straight into a lengthy and expensive commitment.

Why study counselling?

Counselling can be a very rewarding career pathway. Whether you want to work in schools, clinics, nonprofits, prisons, or private practice, the knowledge you gain from studying counselling online can directly improve lives. The tools learned in studying counselling can be positive and life-changing, expanding self-awareness resilience and emotional intelligence – highly valued skills in any labour market.

Can I work as a counsellor after completing one of these courses?

While there is no legal mandate preventing you, we do not recommend it. One hundred hours is not enough study time or practical experience for you to operate ethically and effectively as a professional counsellor. Our courses provide an excellent stepping stone towards further study to obtain a diploma or degree, which is the minimum requirement to join the professional regulatory bodies in Australia, a step we at Careerline Courses highly recommend and support as an ethical industry standard. Our online courses are still suitable for value-adding to your existing workplace or personal life to support your colleagues and friends.

How do I become a Counsellor?

While counselling is not a government regulated industry in Australia, there are professional bodies that ensure counsellors follow minimum ethical standards and have access to affordable insurance. A diploma of counselling is the minimum requirement to work with low-risk clients in Australia within the membership of the Australian Counselling Association. Our online counselling courses provide an excellent opportunity to test your level of interest as you gain confidence and knowledge in a supportive, one-on-one learning environment before committing to the time and expense of a diploma or degree. They are not diploma-level at this time.

Can I work as a psychologist after completing one of these courses?

No. Becoming a psychologist in Australia requires extensive study. A bachelor’s degree followed by a master’s in psychology is required to join the Australian Psychological Association (APA) as required by law to be able to legally practice as a psychologist in Australia.

We recommend our online psychology courses as nurturing entry points to begin following your passion for psychology. Our tutors will support you all the way as you gain knowledge, experience and confidence in your ability to study psychology. It really is excellent preparation for further tertiary studies that require a larger financial commitment. Alternatively, our online psychology courses will work for you if you are seeking to explore the inner workings of your own and your fellow humans’ minds for personal interest or to increase the highly valued employment quotient of emotional intelligence.

What Support will I Receive?

All of our 100-hour online digital marketing courses come with one-on-one expert tutor support who will give you feedback every step of the way. We only employ tutors who are current in their field, which means support is provided via email around their other working commitments. For administrative questions that are not about the course content, please contact our student office.

How long are the courses?

Online courses (tutor-supported)

100-hours: 12 months self-paced study (extensions available upon request)

Each tutor-driven online course takes approximately 100 hours of study applied flexibly over a 12-month period. This means you can tailor your study around your lifestyle, with a minimum part-time requirement of two hours of online study per week over the year, or you can fast-track your career by completing your course within a month or so of full-time study.

Each lesson consists of a practical task and a written assessment for your tutor to grade and provide you with feedback. Additionally, each lesson has a self-assessment quiz for you to test your knowledge.  This means that by the end of the course you will have really engaged with the course materials, which we know equals learning!

When you enrol you will be assigned your own personal tutor and will receive their email address before you submit your first assignment. You may email your tutor whenever you have a question about your studies. Our tutors usually respond within one business day.

Short courses

20 hours (approximately) self-directed learning

Our short courses offer excellent value for money and a sound introduction into your field of study. These courses are self-directed learning packages, which means they don’t offer the same tutor-support as our online courses, but give you greater flexibility and economy while still providing you with the desired learning outcomes and a certificate of completion at the end of your study.

Accreditation and recognition

All of our courses are proudly recognised by the International Accreditation & Recognition Council (IARC), a premier non-government recognition body that ensures quality and consistency of education provided by its members across the Commonwealth and Pacific nations.

Please note, our counselling and psychology courses are not recognised by the Australian industry bodies but instead offer a sound introduction to the field of mental health.
